Furnace Inspection in Red Deer: How Often Should I Have My Furnace Serviced?

Once a year, ideally in early fall before the heating season starts. That is the guidance from the major furnace manufacturers, and it lines up with what our technicians see in Central Alberta homes every winter. Fonda's Plumbing and Heating is a family-owned company that has serviced, repaired and installed furnaces across Red Deer, Sylvan Lake and the surrounding area for over 20 years. In our experience, a furnace that gets a yearly furnace inspection in Red Deer before the cold arrives is far less likely to fail in January than one that has gone a few seasons without attention. Some homes need service more than once a year, and every home needs regular filter changes in between. Below, we cover what Trane, Carrier and Lennox recommend, which households should book more often and what you can take care of yourself between visits.

What the Furnace Manufacturers Recommend

The brands we install and repair every day are consistent on this point. Trane recommends a furnace tune-up once a year, before the heating season begins, and notes that older or neglected furnaces may need more frequent service. Carrier Canada also calls for an annual professional service visit in the fall, with a checklist that covers the burner, ignitor, gas valve, heat exchanger, blower, wiring and flue.

Lennox advises that inspections are best left to an HVAC professional and builds its homeowner guidance around an annual maintenance visit, with filter changes in between. When the people who engineer the equipment agree on once a year, that is the baseline to follow.

Why Timing Your Furnace Inspection in Red Deer Matters

Central Alberta heating seasons are long, and a furnace here can run from September well into May. That adds up to far more run hours than a furnace sees in a milder climate, which means more wear on motors, igniters and safety switches between visits.

Fall is the right window because problems get found while the weather is still mild. If a part needs replacing, you can schedule the repair on your terms instead of waiting on an emergency call during a cold snap. Booking in September or October also means shorter wait times than once the first real freeze hits and every furnace in the city is working hard.

Homes That Need Service More Than Once a Year

A single yearly visit covers most homes, but some furnaces work harder or face more risk. Consider a second check-in, or at least a closer eye between visits, if any of these apply:

  • Your furnace is 15 years or older. Aging parts fail with less warning, and catching them early can stretch the life of the system.

  • You have pets. Fur and dander load up filters and the blower faster than you might expect.

  • You have recently renovated. Drywall and sawdust pull straight into the return air and coat the inside of the furnace.

  • Someone in the home has allergies or asthma. A cleaner furnace and ductwork help keep dust and allergens from recirculating.

  • The furnace has had repeat repairs. A follow-up visit confirms the fix is holding before the coldest months.

  • It heats a shop, garage or rental. Heavy use, dust or tenants who may not report small issues all justify more frequent checks.

What You Can Do Between Visits

Annual service handles the technical work, but a few simple habits keep your furnace in good shape all season:

  • Change your filter on schedule. Lennox recommends replacing one-inch pleated filters monthly, and Carrier suggests every one to three months depending on the filter. Homes with pets or recent renovations should lean toward the shorter end.

  • Keep vents and returns clear. Furniture, rugs and storage boxes that block airflow make the furnace work harder.

  • Clear snow from outdoor vents. High-efficiency furnaces vent through the side of the house, and drifting snow or ice can block the intake or exhaust and shut the furnace down.

  • Test your carbon monoxide alarms. Check them monthly and replace units past their expiry date.

  • Pay attention to changes. New noises, odd smells, cold rooms or a higher gas bill are all worth a call before they turn into a breakdown.

What Happens When You Skip a Year

Skipping one season rarely causes an instant failure, which is exactly why it is easy to put off. The problem is that small issues compound quietly. A dirty flame sensor becomes a furnace that will not stay lit. A dusty blower wheel becomes an overheating furnace and a worn motor. A slow condensate drain becomes a water leak and a shutdown.

There is also your warranty to consider. Trane warns that doing your own maintenance on a furnace still under warranty can void that coverage, and many manufacturer warranties expect regular professional service. Keeping records of a yearly visit protects you if a major part fails down the road.
