Red Deer Water Heater Repair

There are few things worse than running out of hot water mid-winter…or mid-shower, for that matter. In Alberta, we usually use tank water heaters powered either by gas or electricity, so if the power goes out our heaters lose the ability to create more hot water. Fortunately, the water already in the tank should stay hot for several hours. That’s not the case with European-style tankless water heaters, which heat water on demand!

The most common issues we see with water heaters are related to temperature (either too cold or too hot), leaking, rusty or yellowed water, and noise. There are many potential reasons that these problems can occur with your hot water system, so we’ll need to look at the tank itself, the hose connections, the heating elements, and even the computer component to figure out what’s happening. If your water heater is giving you trouble, give Fonda’s Plumbing & Heating a call at 403-347-4848 for emergency or maintenance repair for your Red Deer water heater repair.

Why is My Water Heater Leaking?

The water heaters we service here in Red Deer require either an electrical element or a gas heater to heat the water. Cold water comes into the tank from the bottom and once a full tank is heated, the unit shuts off. When you turn on the hot water faucet, that supply is pumped out from the top of the tank. At a certain level, the unit starts to pump in more cold water to top off the tank. A thermostat regulates the temperature.

If your water heater is leaking, the problem is probably a broken or badly connected hose. In some cases, the unit may be pumping in more cold water than it can hold. In either case, we can fix that! Is the problem cold, lukewarm or scalding water? We may need to reprogram the thermostat or address an issue with the heating elements. In the second case, new parts may need to be installed.

Why is My Water Heater Making Noise?

If the problem is noise, the cause is very likely to be sediment. Especially in the Red Deer area, our water supply is very hard, meaning that it contains a relatively high volume of mineral grains per litre. In fact, our water contains about 150 to 250 milligrams of calcium and magnesium per litre, while 80 to 100 milligrams per litre is considered normal. While this may help us meet our daily mineral intake, it’s quite problematic for metal tanks and pipes.

If your heater uses an electrical element, you may hear crackling, sizzling, banging, popping and hissing sounds when that element becomes covered in sediment. To fix this problem, we’ll completely drain and flush your water tank. To avoid the same problem happening again, call us every year to do the same!
